Butternut Vase

Butternut Vase

This vase-like hollow turning is 8 inches tall and 5.5 inches wide at its widest part. It is made of Butternut which has become a vanishing species due to the Butternut Canker fungal disease. The softness of the curve in this piece is echoed by the softness of the colors of the wood, especially the soft creamy white of the sap wood at the bottom. Even the annual rings have a softness in their curves as opposed to being jagged in the Hollow Turning #1 in this section.

Soft curves make you want to embrace them. There is something very tactile about wood. We like to hold it as well as look at it. When the curves are soft we can't resist picking it up and feeling the softness just like it is hard to resist picking up a baby and feeling those soft curves. This piece would be lovely with a dried arrangement in it.
