Cherry Burl Vessel

This cherry burl bowl measures about 6 inches X 6 inches. It has the usual checks as wood this complicated does not dry evenly and is prone to distortion and checking (small cracks in the wood). It just goes with the nature of the wood. Overall the piece has a rustic look but with a very complicated grain pattern. One could look for hours and not exhaust all the patterns possible.

I was fortunate to make contact with a tree removal company owner. This man was extremely knowledgeable about trees as it was his passion. He also educated me in use of the chain saw, one of my most important tools. Now, I have been using a chain saw for decades, but I learned more from him in two hours than in all the years of use prior to our encounter. He is a real professional.

He confided to me that it hurt him to cut up such pretty wood for the fireplace and he had been looking for someone like me with whom he could share his prime material. Share he did. He recently loaded half my van with prime cherry burl. This is a piece from that load.
