Burl Wood-Spalted Box Elder Vessel

Cherry Burl Wood Vessel

The warmth of this cherry burl bowl, which measures 6 1/2 inches at its tallest point by 5 inches wide, is very appealing to my eye.

People are often surprised at the expense of burl pieces. Just take a walk in the woods and count the number of trees you see. Then count the number of burls you saw in that same walk. When you saw a burl, how much of the tree was actually burl?

The point is that burls are quite scarce. Yet the infinite amount of visual information in the cut and polished surface allows the eye to go over and over it with out losing interest.

As an accent piece it becomes a place for the wandering eye to come to rest and contemplate the infinite creativity of nature.
