Norway Maple Cut Rim Bowl

Hickory Vessels

A friend gave me an interesting piece of wood this year. It was a hickory tree which had rotted in the center but was alive on the outside. I had to ponder a bit to figure out how to best show off the interesting quality of this wood.

As you can see, I decided to make the wood which was on the inside of the tree where the decay was the rim of the bowl. Although the rim wood is very dark,
it is very firm as hickory is supposed to be.

In all, the wood gives a striking quality with the very light and dark contrasting woods. I never cease to marvel at nature's creativity.
